Ideally, I would want to keep my FAA certificate if I cannot find a job that fits me in Europe.

Lastly, it is costly, and if you don't have the right to work in Europe, don't expect to find a carrier to sponsor a visa. Their websites have the different criteria, and they'll give you a much better idea of the process than will.

There are schools that will do the conversion for you in the US.

For mine, I'll need minimum 25 hours (as I have less than 300 hours total time).

You can even keep both current as long as you go through the required regular checks. The ATPL exams can be really nasty/"different" I'm currently a Australian CPL holder doing a conversion course, and it isn't quite that simple.
